Character Education at Our School
At Ysgol Cwm Brombil, Character Education is at the heart of everything we do. As a 3–16 school in the heart of Port Talbot, we believe that academic success, personal wellbeing and future readiness are achieved when young people develop strong character alongside knowledge and skills. We are proud to be working towards the Character Education Quality Mark through ACE – School of Character, which recognises schools that place character development at the centre of their ethos and practice.
What Character Education Means to Us
In our school, Character Education means expecting and supporting our pupils to do the right thing, even when no one is looking. It is about developing moral strength, self-awareness and social responsibility so that pupils are prepared not only for examinations, but for life beyond school.
We understand that true success comes from the balance of attitudes, behaviours and values that shape how pupils learn, relate to others and face challenges. Character is not taught in isolation; it is lived, modelled and reinforced through daily interactions, learning experiences and opportunities across the whole school.
Our Cornerstones
Our approach to Character Education is built around three Cornerstones that define who we are and what we strive for. These Cornerstones are woven through our curriculum, pastoral systems, enrichment opportunities and relationships.
Aspiration – Pathways to Success
Aspiration is about empowering pupils to believe in their potential and to strive for their personal best. We encourage young people to set goals, embrace challenge and persevere when things are difficult, helping them to build clear pathways to success.
Attributes:
Ambition – Having the determination and drive to achieve.
Commitment – Giving your time and energy to something.
Belonging – Forging Connections
Belonging is about creating a community where everyone feels valued, safe and included. We foster strong relationships and a shared sense of responsibility, ensuring that pupils understand the importance of their actions on others.
Attributes:
Responsible – Living up to the promises you have made.
Kind – Doing things for self and others.
Character – Foundations for Growth
Character provides the moral and personal foundations that enable pupils to grow into confident, respectful and principled individuals. We support pupils to make positive choices, stand up for themselves and others, and communicate effectively.
Attributes:
Integrity – Choosing to do the right thing all of the time.
Assertive – Communicating with respect.
Developing the Whole Child
We believe that it is only by developing all of these Cornerstones and attributes together that pupils can truly flourish. Aspiration without belonging lacks purpose; belonging without character lacks direction; and character without aspiration limits potential. When combined, they equip pupils with the skills, values and mindset needed for success in education, employment and life.
Through our shared language of Cornerstones, consistent expectations and positive role modelling, we aim to develop young people who are confident in who they are, respectful of others and ready to contribute positively to society.
Character Education is not an add-on in our school – it is who we are.
